We answer your burning questions about LeanBox’s healthy office food programs
1. Is LeanBox a fresh vending machine?
LeanBox is a full-service corporate food program. Our core business is a fridge stocked with fresh, healthy meals accessible 24-7. Think Whole Foods prepared food selection meets a mini-bar for the office. We also offer additional food services such as cold brew coffee, hot coffee service, a still and sparkling water dispenser, dairy, fruit, and a snack wall.
2. Who are your competitors?
We compete with corporate food budget-lines. Our services are complementary to an existing cafeteria or break room food program and more cost-effective than catered lunches or grocery runs.

3. What is the cost of a LeanBox?
We operate on a subscription model where the monthly cost includes servicing equipment, deliveries made every other business day, subsidy of the food, and ongoing customization of the program for your office. With a service-fee model, employers are better equipped to support employee health by making healthy, fresh food affordable.
4. Can the monthly service fee be offset by increasing the price of food?
Purchasing food at cost is a major benefit for employees. The subsidy ensures that most items in a LeanBox are available to employees for under $6. This incentivizes your employees to take advantage of fresh foods, which have a short shelf life. This helps us reduce waste and manage our inventory. For these reasons, our model doesn’t support increasing food prices.
5. Is there a minimum length of commitment?
We offer monthly and annual contracts, and there’s no minimum length of commitment. We recommend 3-6 month minimal commitments to allow employees time to adjust to a new program.
6. How does payment work?
Bills are issued 30 days in advance. We accept all major credit cards or ACH payments.
7. Where do you source food from?
We work with a variety of local vendors to bring fresh, healthy, interesting foods. We have a internal food committee responsible for procuring high quality, fresh food that will support a diverse range of employee needs (Vegan, Paleo, Gluten Free). Additionally, we collaborate with Sue Levy from Savory Living, a healthy eating professional who helps cultivate our offerings.
8. Are we responsible for unsold food?
No. LeanBox covers the cost of any food that doesn’t sell, but we try to reduce waste by customizing our program to meet your employees’ needs.
9. What do you do with food that doesn’t sell?
We partner with a great organization called Lovin’ Spoonfuls who helps us rescue food before it expires. Since February, we have donated 8,000 lbs of food to people in need.
10. Do we have to clean out the expired goods?
Absolutely not. Our drivers monitor the expiration dates, inventory levels, and are responsible for sorting food during their deliveries.
11. How often are items replaced?
Your LeanBox will be delivered to 2-3 times per week (every other business day) to guarantee freshness.
12. How do you decide what to stock the LeanBox with?
We typically start with a standard inventory to give your employees a sense of the wide product variety, including seasonal products. We make adjustments based on product sales and live qualitative feedback. Your account manager monitors specific site requests and works with our operations team to implement changes.
13. What is required for installation?
Hard-wired internet, 120v outlet, and a 3’ x 3’ x 78″ space.
14. How long is the install process?
Once a contract is signed, it takes about 2 weeks for a LeanBox to be fully installed. Your LeanBox refrigerator is typically delivered on a Friday and stocked with fresh food the following week in preparation for the service launch.
15. What happens if the machine breaks?
LeanBox owns the equipment and is responsible for making sure that everything is working properly and fixed in a timely manner.
16. Do you have issues with theft?
Theft has not been a major issue, but we take preventative measures to encourage honesty. We use payment methods and video recordings to identify users. For instance, a live video recording is captured with each transaction and the only way to unlock the LeanBox is through a form of payment.
17. Are we eligible for any tax breaks by using LeanBox as part of our wellness initiative?
Eligible businesses in Massachusetts can obtain a tax credit up to 25% of the costs associated with implementing a certified wellness program with a maximum of $10,000 per business in a fiscal year. Visit the website of the Wellness Tax Credit for detailed information.
