Food perks are a smart investment in the office, especially for millennial workers
Human resources and administrators are often tasked with both attracting and keeping the best employees—a Herculean task for many companies but essential to their success. While overall culture, benefits and many other factors go into employee satisfaction, a recent study of 1,000 full-time office employees shows that a small gesture—free work snacks—can go a long way.
The takeaway? Companies that provide free food have happier employees than those that do not. While 56% of the employees surveyed reported being happy with their jobs, that number jumped to 67% for those who were provided with free food at work. The perk is most important to millennials, who were three times more likely to value it versus those 45 and over.
But your employees are happy enough without those free work snacks, right? Maybe so, but according to this survey, a whopping 48% of employees would weigh company perks if they were looking for a new job—and 66% of millennials say that if they were offered a job at a company with better perks, including snacks, they’d take it. According to this study, when trying to recruit or retain your employees, the simple offering of food can aid in your success.
Seems like a no-brainer to give employees snack options, right? Despite the numbers that indicate a great potential return on investment in employee happiness and retention for free food, only 16% of all employers surveyed provide free work snacks.
Factors to consider for an office food program
If you’re considering a meal or snack program for your office (wise decision, of course!), there are a few factors to weigh.
It might be tempting to go straight for the granola bars or the sodas, but this survey indicated what you provide is important too, with 83% of employees saying having healthy and fresh snack options (e.g., fruit, vegetables, yogurt, low-calorie snacks) provided in the workplace is a huge perk.”
At LeanBox, we have a buying team that sources food from all over the world, and locally right here in New England as well, to provide healthful, delicious and energizing meals, snacks and drinks. Our philosophy is to provide 80% healthy food and 20% innovative products that are borderline healthy, because everyone deserves a treat once in awhile!
We see employers providing a variety of food and beverage-related perks to employees. Sometimes they’re free, other times the employee is paying the cost or paying a reduced cost towards some of the items. Consider what your employees would be comfortable with, and when you choose a vendor, make sure that payment won’t be a hassle. LeanBox provides a variety of pricing or free options that make the transactions touchless for the employer.
We’ve heard of some companies with a designated shopper. That means there’s an employee on staff who’s filling the fruit bowl, keeping the coffee stocked and ordering the snacks online. While that may work for smaller companies, the fact is that it can be distracting for the employee while also not reflecting the tastes of everyone at the company.
We’ve got central monitoring here at LeanBox. That means we know when certain items are getting low, employees can provide real-time feedback and we can monitor waste to adjust our deliveries for the upcoming weeks and months.
