It’s a bright, shiny new year and new you!
We know starting and hanging on to a New Years Resolution can be hard for just about anyone. It’s the one time of year where people commit to bettering themselves for one, two or however many months it may be. However, if you look at achieving health in a temporary manner rather than for the long term, you might be setting yourself up for failure. We believe that with the right mindset and some guidance, anyone can make serious, long-term changes to better themselves for the long haul. We’ve identified five ways to make your New Year Resolution a success to kick off 2019.
#1: Choose the right resolution.
Sure-you can change your habits for a few weeks, but if you stray too far away from your normal routine, it’ll be near impossible to maintain these new habit(s).
The LeanBox solution: Choose a resolution that can actually work with/for you and your busy schedule. Ideally, you want to choose something that you can simply swap out with something that is already in your daily routine. For example, maybe you’re a morning person and you wake up early to watch the news and wind up for the day.
Try this instead-find a 30 minute exercise video to follow along in the morning. This can be anything from awakening yoga, to a HIIT (aka High Intensity Interval Training) program, to a kickass lean muscle building workout. Or, take the time to make yourself a hearty breakfast. Though, if you miss your breakfast or are in a rush, we have your healthy breakfast covered when you get to work
Why this works: The key here is to get moving before your body even realizes what you’re doing. Plus, if you’re already spending time during the day on a particular activity (i.e. watching the morning news,) that means that you have the time to swap in for a healthier alternative.
#2: Portion Control and Balance.
Eating healthy can be a feat, but depriving your body of an entire food group will only lead to intense cravings and more likely than not, you caving in. Sure, most people have heard the saying “everything in moderation, even moderation” but many don’t know how to make it applicable to their own lives.
The LeanBox solution: Portion control. It’s something that everyone should practice, but few actually do. We live in a country where overeating has become the norm. Take the time to prepare and knowledge yourself so you’re able to identify a single serving. You can also make small changes to your habits that will reap huge benefits by balancing yourself so that you don’t feel deprived. For example, when you’re out to dinner and want to enjoy a fresh baked French roll, dig on in and skip out on dessert.
Why it works: Life is all about compromise and balance. Eating is no different. If you limit your portions and enjoy the foods that you love rather than cutting them out completely, you will not be as likely to get tempted by the cravings that coincide.
#3: Get Prepared.
Preparation for anything in life will yield better outcomes than going about it without the proper knowledge or ammo.
The LeanBox solution: Maybe you’ve heard the saying “If you keep good food in your fridge, you will eat good food.” If you think about it, this approach makes sense. If you load your fridge, cabinets and freezer with food that’s actually GOOD for you, then you don’t have the temptation. Luckily, at work, we are here to help take the guesswork out of eating healthy. LeanBox is packed with food that is not only good for you, but also oftentimes even less expensive than their unhealthy alternatives.
Why it works: We do the work for you so that you can save time and money and actually feel good about your food choices throughout the day. Plus, we leave room and provide treats for the occasional indulgence because, well, refer to problem two.
#4: Do it with a buddy.
You decide to make the change happen by yourself and don’t bring in people around you for support, guidance and encouragement.
The LeanBox solution: Find a friend, coworker, or family member to join you on your ‘New Year, New You’ journey. Make a pact to hold each other responsible for sticking to your healthy resolution, and celebrate your accomplishments as you go along.
Why it works: I, for one, am all about bringing a friend or two along for the ride. It’s not only more fun this way, but you also have someone to hold you accountable. You’re less likely to skip out on a workout, or give in to your sweet tooth if you have someone by your side counting on you to work as a team.
#5: Set goals AND celebrate them!
Empower yourself to embrace the changes you make and then take it one step at a time.
The LeanBox solution: Set small, realistic goals to meet every week. No matter what your resolution is, it’s always better to start small and build up as to not overdo yourself right out of the gates. For example, if you want to be able to run 4 miles without stopping by February, then break it out by week. Tackle one mile the first week, and then push yourself to reach two miles the following week. Repeat this throughout the month and before you know it, it’ll be February and you’ll have 4 straight miles under your belt.
Why it works: Building yourself up to your goal rather than exhausting yourself at the start will allow you to ease in and welcome your lifestyle change. If you celebrate your weekly accomplishment by enjoying a glass of wine, or indulging in a dessert, you will not only have something to look forward to, but you’ll also be surprised at how quickly and easily you reach your goals.
We are all about making changes for the better and know that the New Year is the perfect time to create a new and improved version of yourself. Just remember to make your resolutions realistic and to take the extra steps to set yourself up for success. Grab a friend to tackle the feat with and set goals to celebrate together. Work it into your current schedule so that your changes aren’t messing with your day-to-day activities. And, if you need a little boost of encouragement, we’re always here for you. You got this.
